Tovey famously skippered the national side to Africa Cup of Nations glory in 1996.
The 52-year-old former Kaizer Chiefs defender reportedly had to be resuscitated repeatedly on Tuesday morning following the cardiac arrests. According to a Kickoff report, he is currently in the intensive care unit in a Durban hospital.
The news comes on the heels of reports that another Bafana legend John "Shoes" Moshoeu has also been hospitalised after falling ill with an as yet undiganosed illness. Moshoeu is reportedly in a JOhannesburg hospital.
