Cyber Caliphate, the name adopted by hackers supporting the Islamic State, took credit for the hack.
The attacks came on the same day that the White House announced it is setting up a new agency designed to coordinate cyberthreat intelligence. Now, it's spread across the federal government.
White House press secretary Josh Earnest didn't have any response to the specific threat made via Twitter, but Newsweek's parent company did issue an apology.
"We apologize to our readers for anything offensive that might have been sent from our account during that period, and are working to strengthen our newsroom security measures going forward," IBT Media, Newsweek's owner, said in an emailed statement.
